No more losses...Grady County Jr. High Consolation Trophy!

The Grady County Jr. High basketball tourney held no more losses for Alex after the first heartbreaker to Ninnekah described in the excerpt from the county newspaper below.

In the remainder of the tournament, Ann did not have the breathtaking performance she displayed against Ninnekah's post in the first game, but Ann played solid basketball, proving herself a deserved starter.

Game Two, against Rush Springs, featured Janie (#21 in the back row of the picture - Ann's on and off best friend), who had ridden the bench because of grades and social issues during most prior action. But the coach reached way down on that bench, found Janie and was no doubt glad she did. In her own squirrely and unpredictable way, Janie managed to score 12 points when in the game, lifting Alex easily over the opponent for an opportunity to play on Championship Saturday.

The Consolation Championship on Saturday, 01-17-09, was Courtney's (#24 on the front row, holding the trophy) moment. Courtney did everything right and the end result showed it. Breezing past Union City for the trophy, we all wondered what exactly would have happened if Alex hadn't lost that first game to Ninnekah by four points. Contenders, here we come!

Ann (#33) is shown in the picture in the front row, the only 8th grader invited to join the Freshmen with what they considered to be THEIR trophy. Ann is not the only 8th grader who anchors this team. #15 Katie Hefner (another starter) is shown in the back row, a reliably evolving ballplayer whose mama played six-on-six forward for Alex UNTIL she had made 40 points, at which time she was moved to guard! Each one of these girls has GREAT potential.

The starters spent the night at our house to celebrate after we watched the entire Jr. High County tournament to the last free throw. Five pizzas, six bags of chips and countless gallons of Koolaid barely covered the time before midnight. Good thing I had leftover Santa candy! Morning found me scrambling three dozen eggs and frying up two pounds of bacon. That, along with three sleeves of biscuits, gravy to match, a couple gallons of orange juice and a case of yogurt got them on their way. Warriors, no doubt! :)
