The local newspaper on the firing of the Alex high school basketball coach...

by Chuck Larsen of the Chickasha Express-Star

Conspicuous by his absence at the Grady County Tournament last week was Alex girls’ basketball coach Darin Gammill.

Alex School Superintendent Norvel Heston said Friday morning that the first-year coach was suspended from his duties on January 17 based on complaints received from a parent and is still under suspension pending board action.

The Blanchard Police Department is currently doing an investigation into an incident involving Gammill at approximately the same time that the school was initially contacted but Detective Greg Alexander said that he could not comment at this time.

A special school board meeting was held Monday night at which Heston recommended Gammill’s dismissal from both his coaching and teaching duties. Heston added that a hearing has been set for Monday, March 2 but could not comment further on the situation.

Assistant coach Tammy Baker has taken the team over for the balance of the season.
